BASF has responded to the high cost of crude oil feedstock for steam crackers with the development of a new catalyst promising production of olefins directly from gas. Experts at BASF's Catalysis Research in Ludwigshafen have developed the catalyst for use in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, a process for the industrial-scale conversion of synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) into hydrocarbons. According to the release the catalyst is the first step in its development of process technology that is scheduled for completion by the middle of the nexl decade. Dr Andreas Kreimeyer, a member of BASF's board of executive directors and research executive director, said: 'The use of synthesis gas will offer us the possibility of broadening our raw material base in future.
