Federal Highway Administrator Mary Peters claims that the Bush administration, which originally proposed cutting 2003 highway spending by 8.6 billion dollars, is now supporting restoration of 4.4 billion dollars of the spending cuts. Peters' remarks to various groups at ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 were the first public endorsement by the administration of restoration of highway funding to the level guaranteed by TEA 21.The Senate Budget Committee approved a spending blueprint for FY 2003 that calls for 28.9 billion dollars in spending for the federal-aid highway program in 2003, or restoration of 5.7 billion dollars of the 8.6 billion dollars cut contained in the administration's budget. This is more than the latest Bush administration proposal or that which passed the House of Representatives on March 20.
