That's because the fan decks, color sampling-cards and other color marketing tools manufactured by Matherson have to exactly represent the colors that customers expect to receive when they purchase interior paints for their homes, order fabrics for new furniture or buy a new vehicle at their automobile dealership,"We have to hold much better precision in our color matching than the companies we serve," said William Fensterer, sales and marketing manager for Matherson."They are color matching to high quality standards, while we are color matching to laboratory standards. There is a lot at stake if our samples don't match their colors exactly." Matherson regularly holds tolerances in color-matching to 0.3 of Delta E,where one Delta E is defined as the distance in color space at which a human can typically begin to perceive a difference between a color and a slight variation of that color. To maintain those tight tolerances,Matherson renewed its entire factory in Presezzo,Italy about five years ago by installing stateof-the-art machinery for coating, printing and finishing and developing some proprietary methods of applying color coatings to a variety of substrates,Fensterer said.Within the last year Matherson has also expanded its offering in the automotive color sampling field by opening a modern spraying plant.A number of its 70 employees are professionals trained in the art of color formulation, application and matching. But all of that equipment and technique is hampered strongly if Matherson isn't able to accurately measure the color of the samples it manufactures and communicate color specifications with its customers,he said.
