As a mother, the wife of a Columbia Univ. biomedical engineering professor, and principaland vice president at Harris & Harris Group - a venture capital firm that invests in nanotechnology - Ushio is successfully negotiating career and family life, taking her far from the "fairly stereotypical American suburban upbringing" that she says she experienced growing up in Reston, VA.
