The Operation Control System (OCS) is the central component of the Shanghai Transrapid. The OCS is the central control, monitoring and operation facility and has been developed by Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) in Brunswick. The OCS could be implemented in record time due to the many years of Transrapid experience and the competence in the field of signalling and operation control systems concentrated in Brunswick. Siemens TS met the challenge of refining the Transrapid system on the basis of the Transrapid Test Facility in the Emsland and obtaining product maturity until handover to the customer with their proven signalling and operation control system components and new software solutions. This article describes the steps Siemens Transportation Systems have taken to demonstrate that the OCS of the Shanghai Transrapid fully and correctly satisfies the requirements made. The article provides an overview of the OCS architecture followed by a description of the Test Centre and the individual phases of OCS testing and is closed with explanations on OCS validation and an outlook on the future.
