Continuous infrastructure monitoring can upgrade an infrastructure operator's maintenance strategy to include condition-based or predictive maintenance. Due to the installation of measurement equipment on a regular scheduled train, Deutsche Bahn AG now analyses more than 2400 km of track every Monday to obtain longitudinal level data. The infrastructure managers receive a clearly structured report highlighting the track geometry defects in their area. This information allows infrastructure operators to plan track repair work more precisely and check and assess the quality and sustainability of repair work within a short period of time. The need to include additional lines in continuous infrastructure monitoring requires additional regular scheduled trains to be fitted with measurement systems. As part of fitting out these trains, DB Systemtechnik GmbH has further developed the measurement system for continuous infrastructure monitoring. In cooperation with infraView the new measuring system is designed to leverage the possibilities of state-of-the-art IT (predictive maintenance, internet of things, Big Data). Infrastructure monitoring thus offers infrastructure companies and integrated groups an opportunity to utilize state-of-the-art IT technologies, thus delivering tangible results (quality, availability, costs) as part of predictive maintenance.
