The stability of brine flow has been an unshakeable foundation of the RO desalination process, which is nearly 50 years old. The leap from stable to pulse flow enables significantly higher solute concentration in brine flow and higher recovery rates to be achieved. This also allows in many cases to avoid antiscalant dosing, to reduce power consumption due to non-continuous brine pumping, and to diminish pressure drops in stages. From a capital expenses point of view, Pulse Flow reduces the number of pressure vessels, and membranes due to more equal pressure distribution between membranes. A single-stage structure without inter-stage busters reduces cost.
