摘要

DURING the past winter, a 20in (500mm) subsea pipeline has been installed using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) in the frosty north of Russia's Sakhalin Island - one of the most sensitive environments in the region. The Sakhalin-1 project, operated by Exxon Neftegas, is one of the most challenging and crucial energy-development projects in the Far East in the past decade. It provides valuable fuel resources from three different fields located in extreme subarctic conditions, off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island.
