Mexico enjoys modest increase in demand for leaf tobacco

Mexico is enjoying a small increase in interest in its Burley tobacco, but it is still short of the production level it achieved in the early 1990s and a long way short of the potential that it was reckoned to have. Thanks to a modest upturn in demand from the domestic market and a small increase in the target for export Burley, Mexican tobacco production seems set to enjoy a modest rise, at least in respect of the crop that growers began harvesting in late January. According to a crop estimate at that time, Burley production will increase by about 2,000 tonnes, or 12%, to 18,800 tonnes, Domestic manufacturers will absorb about 75% of the increase.
