XM982 Excalibur

The XM982 Excalibur is an extended range 155mm artillery projectile (ERAP) intended to replace the older M864 round. A development contract for the XM982 was awarded to Raytheon's TI Systems Division in February 1998 to begin the system development and demonstration of the projectile. The contract includes options for the production of 17,450 rounds during Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) and the company estimates the Army requirement could be for up to 250,000 rounds at a cost of $3 billion. The Congress prodded the Army to merge the TCM (trajectory correctable munition) and XM982 concepts, and as a result, the Swedish FMV which had pioneered the TCM concept was brought in as a partner in December 2002.
