International Ballistic Missile Defense

Several countries are now examining the possibility of fielding a ballistic missile defense system, intended to protect their territory or armed forces from the threat of tactical ballistic missiles. Most of these efforts are at a very early stage of discussion, and the aim of this report is to summarize their current status until actual development efforts warrant separate reports. Many of these countries are discussing the possibility of involvement with the United States in cooperative efforts, piggybacking on the considerable US expenditures over the past decade in BMD. In November 2010, NATO ratified a US proposal to create an interim capability in Europe using a land-based version of the Standard missile with associated target acquisition radars erected in Poland and Romania.
