US Hypersonic Cruise Missiles

The US Air Force and Navy are beginning to examine hypersonic cruise missiles to attack surface targets. The Navy has supported a string of such programs such as Fasthawk (also known as Low Cost Missile System/LCMS) in 1996, High Speed Strike Missile (HiSSM) in 1997. In a related move, in 1998 DARPA began a program called ARRMD (Affordable Rapid Response Missile Demonstrator) which examined air-launched hypersonic cruise missile propulsion. ARRMD resulted in a dual-combus-tor ramjet (DCR) design that underwent lab trials in the summer of 2001.
