Fire Shadow is a new initiative under Britain's Indirect Fire Precision Attack (IFPA) effort started in 2005 which aims to develop a loitering munition that can operate over an area for up to ten hours before the operator selects a suitable target and carries out the terminal attack. The missile resembles a small UAV but is intended for terminal attack. The Fire Shadow program is being undertaken as a rapid deployment initiative with an aim to field an initial Block 1 missile by 2012 and then improve the design over the next several years to create an optimal design. The first production tranche of about 25-50 missile began delivery to the Royal Artillery in March-April 2012. Although there were plans to deliver missiles to the forces in Afghanistan, this project was halted.
