The Leather Industry in Italy in the Year 2000

The Italian industry, measured by the output of tanned and finished hides and skins, is and remains a powerful one. Some 10-11% of the world's manufactured leather, amounting to a staggering 160 million sq.m plus 46,000 tons of heavy leather, is produced in the country. Why is it then that the annual meetings in June of leather industry associations such as the National Union of the Tanning Industry (UNIC) and the National Association of Footwear, Leather Goods and Tannery Machine builders (ASSOMAC) convey a more than vague impression of concern for, even fear of, the future?
