India, incomparable, intoxicating and inviting: a bewildering array of sights and sounds, tastes and textures, cultures and civilisations. With over 900 million people using 400 languages and dialects, the vast sub-continent of India is always going to present a difficult task to any reviewer who wishes to summarise it in a few pages. This is a country which ranks seventh in area in the world but second in population. It ranks second in the world in the production of rice, wheat, tobacco and is first in cattle population, tea production and film making.
