An alternative cause for BSE and variant CJD related to post-industrial environmental contamination

Possibly the greatest dilemma facing scientists working on prion diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is the ubiquitous misunderstanding and misinformation circulated within both the lay and scientific press about these diseases. The truth concerning how little is known about this disease is masked by statements which at best should only be called theory, but are absorbed by the public as fact.
