The operation normally follows splitting and shaves the flesh side of the leather reducing its substance. Many variables make shaving a complex process, which needs careful examination to properly assess its effect. Only the classic reciprocating multi-roller machine is in current use. Attempts to develop a practical throughfeed shaver have not been successful at the time of this publication.
