Beyond the Information Technology Agreement: Harmonisation of Standards and Trade in Electronics

He expansion of trade in electronics goods has contributed in a major way to productivity growth, human welfare and societal change. Global trade in the information technology (IT) and electronic products has doubled over the period 1997 to 2005, totalling over $1.4 trillion (World Trade Organization (WTO), 2007). Following the growing trend of fragmentation or relocation of production processes across countries, developing countries have increasingly participated in the production and assembly of electronic products. Investment aiming at expanding the sector in developing countries also generates positive spillovers in terms of technology transfer and innovation.
