In February, the U.S. Navy awarded Austal USA a $235 million contract modification for the detailed design and construction of the 15th 337′10″×93′6″ expeditionary fast transport (EPF) vessel. As the U.S. Department of Defense's multiuse all-aluminum platform, the fast transport vessels have provided rapid deployment/transportation of personnel, equipment and supplies. EPFs have supported military logistics, sustainment and humanitarian relief operations. With a draft of 13′ and a full displacement of more than 2,500 tons, the EPF is able to access inferior ports with minimal external assistance providing flexibility to fleet and combatant commanders. With its maneuverability, large open mission bay and ability to achieve speeds greater than 35-knots, the EPFs have the capability to support additional missions such as special operations and medical support. The shallow draft enhances theater port access. The EPFs feature 20,000 sq. ft. of mission bay area.
