Drilling activity in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shelf market dropped dramatically during 2009, but the region was buoyed by deepwater and ultradeepwater rig activity.rnLow natural gas prices were the reason behind the dismal shallow water drilling. Oil pricing was lower throughout most of the year compared with record highs in 2008, but the long-term nature of deepwater exploration and development supported that market.
