Blount Boats completes ferry for Shelter Island, N.Y.

In mid-February, the 101'×39' passenger/vehicle ferry Southside left Blount Boats in Warren, R.I., for Shelter Island, N.Y. Once there, the ferry was put into service on a half-mile run for South Ferry between Shelter Island and the South Fork of Long Island, N.Y.rnThe boat is a sistership to the Sunrise, which Blount delivered to South Ferry in 2002. DeJong & Lebet, Jacksonville, Fla., designed both ferries.rnThe double-ended ferry has two 400-hp MTU Series 60 diesels, one in each end, that are hooked up to Twin Disc MG-516 marine gears (4.5:1 ratios) that turn 4-bladed Rolls-Royce props at the end of 4" Aquamet 17 shafts.
