Built with federal money as a concept demonstrator for the U.S. Navy, the Susitna can operate both as a 17-knot SWATH vessel and as a landing barge. Although not originally conceived as a ferry, the 195'x60', variable-draft, triple-hull vessel was built by Alaska Ship & Drydock in Ketchikan, Alaska, for use as a vehicle/passenger ferry by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough near Anchorage, Alaska.
