Wool prices were slightly softer at the October 14 sale and Cape Wools' Merino indicator closed the day down 1.4% at R56.64/kg (clean), following the four-week upward trend during which the indicator gained 10.6%. The indicator still was 15% higher than at the same sale the previous season. The softer prices can be attributed to a slight correction in the market after the steep price rise and to the strengthening of the rand to a 14-week high against the US dollar. The rand was trading at R7.21, which was an appreciation of 2.3% against the dollar compared with the previous week's exchange rates.
