The growing prominence of Cervelt, the superfine fibre made from the down undercoat of the New Zealand red deer, was marked recently when the eyes of the world were on New Zealand when it hosted, and went on to win, the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Douglas Creek, the company that developed the fibre, identified several VIP visitors to the tournament, held across New Zealand during September and October, and presented them with exclusively produced hand woven and knitted scarves made from Cervelt. Ten visitors were selected, including Richard Branson, who received a 'Virgin Red' Cervelt scarf produced in a red matching the branding of Branson's ever-expanding business. Richard Keddell, co-director and owner of Douglas Creek, explains that the company wanted several high-profile potential customers to experience Cervelt, with the Rugby World Cup providing a great opportunity with so many high-profile visitors in New Zealand at the time. "Hopefully these people will talk about Cervelt and spread the word on their return to Europe," he says.
