The mercerisation of wool involves the removal of scales from the surface of the fibre for a smooth, silky sheen. A fine layer of silicone polymer is permanently grafted onto the fibre surface to improve the hand feel. Whilst there is no change to the micron, Australian Wool Innovation (AW1) has noted a perceived improvement in handle equivalent to a wool two to three times finer.Micro-encapsulated essential oils (particles of oil are surrounded by a coating to form small capsules) are bound to the fibre with an MCP binder typically used in cosmetics. The oils are released slowly during wear. Aromatherapy Merino is particularly suited to loungewear for Pilates or yoga.
