A new dawn

The time is right for a revival in the UK textile industry. This was the message of a conference that brought together business leaders, academics and government figures under the title: 'A New Dawn - Rebuilding UK Textile Manufacturing'. Conference chairman James Sugden, director of Johnstons of Elgin, said there was a core of UK companies that were thriving, focused on the higher end of the market - but there was scope to do a lot more. The industry needed to capitalise on the growing costs and complexities involved in sourcing overseas, on consumers' increased environmental concerns and on the cachet of 'Made in Britain'.
