Although there are good-quality instructional videos now available via your favorite digital device, there JL JL still is nothing like a reliable coffee-cup-stained hard copy that can travel from workbench to kitchen table to bed stand when you're determining the next course of action on your project. It was thus a welcome sight to see Ian Hugh Smith's new book, Wooden Boatbuilding: The Sydney Wooden Boat School Manuals. The book is actually a compendium of four of Smith's previously published, stand-alone manuals penned for the Sydney Wooden Boat School in Australia, which ran classes from 1989 to the early 2000s. Those previous manuals are: Building a Traditional Clinker Dinghy, West System Strip Planking, Plywood Clinker Construction, and Building the Whiting Skiff. The new sections cover heavier traditional carvel construction and common repairs. The manual is comprehensive and well-illustrated; it is intended for the beginner but has plenty of good information for the experienced builder.
