New Zealand boat designer Frank Pelin designed this 20' runabout in about 1973. David and Janet Grace of Hawkes Bay spent two years restoring her and relaunched her, appropriately renamed RESURRECTION. They replaced her ring frames and stringers, then replanked her with cedar strips and sheathed the hull in fiberglass set in epoxy. She is powered by a rebuilt 1973 Volvo 170/280 outdrive engine. LOON, the prototype for the Boothbay Harbor One-Design, carrying sail No. 0, was designed by Geerd Hendel and built by Benny Rand and Norman Hodgdon in 1937. Hendel and his friend W. Starling Burgess sailed LOON on weekends in the waters around Boothbay while both of them were working on the AMERICA'S Cup yacht RANGER in Bath. Allan Miller and Pam Burke of East Boothbay relaunched the recently restored LOON just a few hundred yards from where she was first launched 82 years ago.
