In an instructional video, Wayne Ettel explains his new method of fairing. Until the recent work on CHUBASCO, his crew began fairing wooden hulls using high-speed grinders, and finished off with hand planes. But contemporary environmental laws in California prohibit the release of so much dust. To contain the dust from stripping the hull down to bare wood, a crew has to build a complete plastic tent over the boat, and suit up in high-tech respirators and protective suits. But the tent and safety gear make for a dusty, foggy, tight, and uncomfortable working environment . When fairing, boatwrights need good light, the ability to step back to judge their work, and ease of movement.Faced with these challenges when fairing CHUBASCO, Ettel decided to try using a power plane attached to a dust extractor. The plane and vacuum worked well in keeping the working environment dust-free and in fairing the scarf joints, but it was not effective for fairing the hollows and convex curves of the hull.
