The term "false stem" is just another way of saying the forward part of a two-piece stem. This system, used as an alternative to the conventional rabbeted stem, is found on a great number of hulls. With a two-piece stem, the planking runs past the beveled inner or "real stem" and is fastened to it. Then the planking is trimmed to the stem's profile and planed square to the boat's center-line. Finally, the false stem is fastened to that squared-off profile, and shaped.
