"On the western bank of the Mohawk River in upstate New York," Don Rittner, Schenectady County and City Historian, writes, "volunteers are building a replica of ONRUST. The original ONRUST, which is Dutch for 'Restless,' was the first American-built ship of the Dutch yacht type. She was constructed by Capt Adriaen Block and his crew at the tip of Manhattan between January and April 1614 out of necessity: they were stranded after their ship TYGER burned in December 1613. "The replica is being built at the Mabee Farm Historic Site of the Schenec-tady Historical Society at Rotterdam Junction by the nonprofit organization New Netherland Routes, Inc. More than 100 volunteers have been trained by master shipwright and architect Gerald de Weerdt. As Director of the Maritime Museum in Terschelling, The Netherlands, he spent 15 years excavating more than 150 shipwrecks from the reclaimed Zuider Zee.
