Eastern Long Island's magic boat

A small piece of the East End of Long Island, New York, has been home for almost 100 years to a 16 '6" wooden sloop known as the SS class. One hundred and fifty-four SSs were built initially, most of them just before or not long after World War I, for a specific purpose: to teach children how to sail in the bays of a 15-mile stretch of Long Island's South Shore, encompassing the villages of the Moriches, Eastport, Remsen-burg, Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, Quiogue, and Quogue.
