Robert Goddard began taking black-and-white photographs of coasting schooners while he was still a teenager in the 1920s, and continued shooting them until around World War II. He focused on the coasting schooners that carried bulk cargoes up and down the East Coast; coal, granite, and wood were the principal loads, and wind was the primary locomotion. Loading and off-loading were primitive and labor-intensive by today's standards.
