My earliest memories of botters go back to my childhood in Holland, in the mid-1940s. My grandfather had a mast- and block-making business, and botter fishermen were his mainstay until he moved the business from de Lemmer on the Zuiderzee to Amsterdam in 1928, just before the Zuiderzee was closed off. He met his wife on the island of Urk, where he traveled frequently to collect payment for the masts he made for botters.
