In 1995-96,1 wrote four columns on wood adhesives (WB Nos. 125, 128, 129, and 130). Perhaps it is time to look at the subject again. I have not seen totally new glue types during the ensuing 18 years, but modifications of formulas and new substrate primers have been developed. Our understanding of how glue failures occur under wood's long-term moisture and heat cycling is also improving, but we are still a long way from a full understanding. As one prominent researcher, Charles R. Fri-hart at the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory (USFPL), has put it: "Wood can be very easy to bond, but making the bonds durable against changing moisture, high temperature, and high loads can be difficult. All these conditions can be critical issues, especially considering that wood products are expected to last decades, if not centuries, without the adhesive changing in performance characteristics."
