Unraveling the Cost of Amateur Boatbuilding: A tight budget can be an asset

A mateurs on small budgets are sometimes able to achieve remarkable things when building boats for themselves. I know this firsthand, because I have built a number of boats for myself. These amateur efforts led me into hobbyist boat designing, then into studying the craft so I could do it better, and finally into professional boat design. Through all of that, I never shook off my love of building boats of my own.
