Q-boats, with their low freeboard and delicate long ends, are every bit as sleek as their big sisters: the J-boats of AMERICA'S Cup fame. They are exceptionally beautiful and under sail they'll knock your socks off! Designed primarily for racing with each boat a bit different from the other (this was a so-called "open" class), all of them also had pretty decent accommodations for cruising. They were designed and rated under the Universal Rule, whose formula played sail area and waterline length against displacement, and which established a maximum rating of 25' for Q-boats. (Next smaller were the 20-rater R-boats, and next larger were the P-boats which topped out at 31.)
