One sunny autumn afternoon 28 years ago, I borrowed a friend's Laser-class sloop from a Rhode Island beach and explored the West Passage of Narragansett Bay. Directly across from where I'd set out was Conanicut Island—popularly known as Jamestown, for its principal settlement—and on the southwest corner of the island was a well-defined cove called Dutch Harbor. I was new to the area—I'd recently moved there for school—and was looking for a job to cover the rent. In Dutch Harbor, there was a big yellow building facing the water and emblazoned with blue letters spelling the words "Dutch Harbor Boat Yard." As I tacked through its mooring field, noting a number of nicely kept wooden yachts, I made a mental note to call the place when I returned home.
