Secure authentication with dynamic tunneling in distributed IP mobility management

The world has entered the post-PC era, in which mobile computing devices such as smartphones and wearables are used more than PCs. We are now entering a new age characterized by the Internet of Things, in which more than 212 billion sensing, computing, and communicating devices will be connected by 2020. While an explosion of data traffic by Internet of Things devices is expected, we have already witnessed the recent explosion of mobile data traffic in the post-PC era (e.g., mobile data traffic grew 69 percent in 2014). Distributed mobility management is one effort to cope with the increasing mobile data traffic. In this article, a new scheme designed for secure authentication with dynamic tunneling is introduced. The scheme is devised to dynamically configure tunnels for data packets by taking into account the number of session arrivals and the number of handovers, while providing secure authentication in a network-based distributed mobility management deployment coexisting with Proxy Mobile IPv6.
