One day earlier this year, the Dreamgirls cast and crew were encamped at an old Cadillac dealership in South Central L. A. that had been spruced up to look like the offices of Rainbow Records, a fictional Motown-like music label. For the uninitiated, the legendary Michael Bennett musical, which starred Jennifer Holliday and tells the story of the Dreams, a girl group not unlike the Supremes, takes you from their winning an amateur talent contest in the early sixties to the group's phenomenal success at the hands of their manipulative manager, Curtis, to their inevitable breakup as Effie, the vocally superior but more difficult and overweight lead singer, gets pushed into the background so that the prettier, sexier Deena can shine out front.
