On a Liverpool beach, a man barely past boyhood sits on the sand, his face lineless in the daylight, and sings a song about the girl he loves, who's as young and perfect as he is. "Is there anybody going to listen to my story," he begins, "all about the girl who came to stay? She's the kind of girl you want so much it makes you sorry, still you don't regret a single day...." The feeling is universal; the lyric, from "Girl," most of us know by heart. It's one of 31 Beatles songs that Julie Taymor, the inventive director of Frida and the Broadway musical The Lion King, has woven into a passionate movie musical called Across the Universe, set in New York in the sixties, which turns the Beatles songbook into an audiovisual love song to the planet.
