I am appalled at the kind of environmental destruction perpetrated at the Berkeley Pit ("Creatures From the Black Lagoon," issue 15.09). BP (nee British Petroleum) owns ARCO (nee Atlantic Richfield), which bought Anaconda Mining, operated it for five years, then stopped mining and turned off the pumps. BP and/or ARCO should give Don and Andrea Stierle a $100 million endowment to construct and operate a well-equipped facility for extremophile research.
