Simon Macara's life changed on July 11,1991, as his chartered boat braved choppy seas off the Big Island of Hawaii. He'd spent a year plotting the optimal spot to watch the longest total solar eclipse since the early 14th century, and he reached a hole in the cloud cover just in time. It was a personal nirvana. "I realized then that I would spend the rest of my life chasing eclipses," he says. Since then, the 45-year-old British conservationist has traversed the globe to witness 11 total solar eclipses and scores of partial solar and lunar ones. And he's not alone.
