Ron Worswick calls himself a "product of the Depression.".. He was in his 50s before he got into the wire rope business. But he took a $400,000 a year company and turned it into one that is doing $26 million-plus a year. And, oh yes, he' s also a very successful horse breeder and trader. To see how this colorful and successful life unfolded, let's start in the beginning. Worswick was born in 1928 in Boston, MA, grew up through the Depression, and remembers it well. "My father was a draftsman, but lost his job like so many others," Worswick says. "When the WPA projects came along, he couldn't find a nickel to take a bus to get to the employment line." In the late 30s he got a job as a draftsman again, for a company making packag- ing equipment. He then was offered a good job at the Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, NY. But, as says Worswick, "He was fearful to make the jump because he thought it might not work out and he would lose the job he had. He knew what it was like to go through four years of being unemployed."
