It was May 1883, and the New York and Brooklyn Bridge was finally complete. Throngs of people celebrated its grand opening. The New York Times dubbed May 24th "the people's day," and said, "The select ten thousand who participated in the ceremonious opening of the bridge were as nothing when compared with the vast multitudes that swept across the East River structure yesterday."
