Currently the communication cable industry requires the inclusion of a filling or flooding compound to prevent the migration of water into an electrical or fibreoptic cable. Recently, several types of copolymers have emerged as gelling agents for these materials. The choice of hydrocarbon carrier can greatly influence the physical, thermal, and functional properties of the filling compound. Several new gels have been formulated based on low pour hydrocarbon carriers and copolymer gelling agents. These gels possess superior physical properties and the implications of their use are discussed in this article.
