Female participation in aviation has lagged other traditionally male-dominated sectors such as medicine, law and law enforcement. In 1910, when Ray-monde de Laroche, a talented French engineer became the first woman and only the 36th person to earn a pilot's licence, she single-handed bumped up the female quotient of licensed pilots to three per cent. Today, the percentage of female pilots is approximately six per cent in most developed countries, according to the Institute for Women of Aviation Worldwide (iWoAW), an organization set up to encourage more women to seek career opportunities in aviation. In 2011, women made up about five per cent of the 53,000 members of the Air Line Pilots Association, representing pilots for major and region carriers in Canada and the U.S.
