Colonel William Shanks, Jr., USMC (Retired)

On December 31, 2019 the Naval Aviation community lost one of its best, Colonel William Shanks, Jr. USMC, (Retired). He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for over 32 years and flew over 6,000 hours in a variety of aircraft, from Corsairs to Phantoms. He was a combat veteran of three wars: World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Born in Rexford, KS on June 2, 1924, Bill answered his country's call to duty on June 22, 1942 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He entered the V-5 Naval Aviation Cadet Program and was commissioned as a 2ndLt on September 11, 1943 at NAS Corpus Christi, TX.
