USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71): Overcoming Obstacles to Get Back Underway

In a visit to Guam on May 2, U.S. Pacific Fleet's senior leaders stressed appreciation and confidence in the multi-service, multi-agency response to the Navy's COVID-stricken aircraft carrier. "The joint team - the Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, and Coast Guard - all came together to support shipmates in need," Admiral John C. Aquilino, Pacific Fleet Commander said, adding, "An operation such as this has not been executed in my 36 years of doing this business." Admiral Aquilino continued, "After being able to get to Guam and seeing the operation in action, Fleet Master Chief James Honea and I were enormously impressed, having watched the Sailors fight through this adversary to get back on their ship. I'm more proud than ever having seen firsthand what our Sailors have had to do." Thousands of Sailors from USS Theodore Roosevelt had been moved to local hotels in an effort to implement an aggressive mitigation strategy to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health of the Sailors. Sailors who tested negative twice for COVID-19, were asymptomatic and who had completed off-ship quarantine or isolation were permitted to rotate back onboard ship in late April.
