Statistical characterization of complex sea-states in the Bay of Biscay for the design of marine structures

Response of marine structures undergoing wave action is generally assessed in the frequency domain hence requiring an accurate spectral description of the loading. Sea-states are generally described by analytical functions such as JONSWAP or Pierson-Moskowitz spectra which are not well suited for a proper description of complex sea-states hence can induce a bias in the assessment of the response of the structure. Taking advantage of the existing partitioning data available in the HOMERE database, a mapping of the occurrences of multimodal sea-states over the domain is completed, showing that such complex sea-states are numerous, hence a detailed and accurate description of the sea-states spectral content is necessary for a proper assessment of the response of marine structures.
